4 axis CNC milling, 3d printing and casting were a few technologies explored to realize the potential of digital fabrication in standardized mass production. An additional layer of parametric design of the object enabled to transform it into mass customized production. The knowledge of fabrication technology while designing offers multifold advantages of innovation and creativity as the strengths and limitations of the technology can be turned into design opportunities. The back and forth between the machine and design table sharpened these understanding which was the most valuable take away from the course. How can you critically understand the process to increase the value of the resultant product? The designed product is a redesigned door handle for Kresge Theatre, (a performance space in Carnegie Mellon University) inspired from a double bass player stroking the strings. The experience is replicated to extend the tactility to the audiences opening the doors to the theatre.
