Construction Drawing Studio

Detailing Studio: Adaptive re-use of guest house to art cafe
Tectonic Operations
Guided by Smit Vyas

Designed in the 6th semester of undergraduate program at CEPT, it was the first step into detailing out an entire design and learning specification. Material expression with practicality was given prime importance to produce the drawings. The art cafe tries to create a new world inside with throbbing youthful discussions over snacks and provides a huge volume achieved by thick walls on the periphery and light metal columns in space. The new built form sinks into the ground as a humble response to the scale of the existing. A load bearing wall was replaced by columns, governing the geometry of the new. the dynamic elements help the space flow inside and outside and allows the space to breathe. These also helps to achieve the idea of kitchen as an art and not a service. The white swan marble pivoted window is a response to see through the building interior when open and enjoy the backlit marble veins when closed. The floor of cafe sitting has been imagined as a seamless bowl made of residue flooring which lends a rejuvenating energy to the cafe. The cafe lays hidden while the kitchen is encountered from outside and a narrow entry with an inside light which attracts one in.
