Case Studies

Steel, Timber and Hybrid Concrete/Stone Masonry
Material and Construction Systems
Guided by Jeremy Ficca

The experience of architecture boils down to the making of it. Without understanding of materiality and construction systems, architecture is a mere image. Detailing and specification is the core of architectural expression. The opening of the door precedes  the spatial experience. The experience of framing the view is as much in the details as it is in the view. Architectural detailing gthus differentiates great architecture from good architecture. The following case studies attempt to unravel the tectonics which give form to the envelope of the buildings studying the foundation, floor, wall, opening, slab, ceiling and roof. The case studies are done across three material systems: Steel, Timber and Hybrid concrete/stone masonry system. While the details of these projects existed in the books and on internet as 2d wall sections, translation of the details from 2d to 3d models to understand how elements came together in 3 dimensions was the most important.
